Democratic Expulsion, Republican Deceit.
There were two major occurrences in two southern states this past week. One of which has received a great deal of coverage and the other… Not so much. Let’s go over the political happenings, and then discuss what it means for the republic of the United States.
What happened in two southern state legislatures?
In Tennessee, during a session of the Tennessee House of representatives, two out of three of their democratic lawmakers were expelled from their state legislature. Justin Jones, Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson began to protest on the floor of the state legislature in Tennessee. They were protesting a lack of care or substantive action regarding gun law reform on the heels of the Nashville school shooting in late March. In response to their civil disobedience, the house exercised a law that hasn’t been used since the civil war and expelled two of three protesters from their elected positions in the state legislature. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who are both young Black Tennessee representatives were expelled from their positions, while Gloria Johnson, a 60-year-old white woman was able to keep her seat.
