Would You Trade-In the Skin You’re In?
That isn’t a question that gets readily asked, because it is absolutely impossible to trade your skin or switch your race for another. So why ask?
Now, much like people who identify as transgender, there is a growing population that identify themselves as trans-racial; identifying as a race other than the one they were born into.
But that isn’t what I’m referencing here.
So, let me pose the question in its entirety.
With the history of Black people and white people in this country; knowing who is considered the majority and the privileges it offers them, and knowing who is considered the “minority” and the privileges that are not afforded to them, if you had the ability to choose to be the opposing race, would you?
I am willing to wager that any white person, regardless of their political affiliation, who they grew up with or whether they consider themselves an ally, would choose to be born white. Hey, I get it, because the choice is clear and obvious, right? I mean even for those who struggle in their lives, as white people, it is often different and not as emotionally and psychologically damaging, as Black people who struggle in their lives. So, if you have it bad as a white person, why would you choose to have it worse, as a Black person?
